Riverside Market

Christchurch City

Riverside Market is a world-class, inner-city trading market, packed with fresh food and produce, ready-to-eat food, restaurants, bars and boutique retail located in the heart of Christchurch.

Charged with creating a vibrant, authentic atmosphere, Kirkcaldie introduced unique interior flavours to the bustling market. Eclectic finishes, textures, colours and feature elements help to complement and encompass the 60+ tenants who share the space.

The design includes timeless furniture to seat up to 400 visitors, distinct flooring finishes of wood and tile, hand-woven shades and vintage pendant lights from Europe and Indonesia – all bringing a depth of character and warmth.

Inspired by travels through Italian markets, a 40m-long wall sets the scene below pitched reclaimed wood ceilings, a refurbished antique clock, and windows into another world. To add elements of visual surprise, visitors encounter striking items such as a school of fish, a vintage grape harvest basket, an aged workbench, a miniature potbelly stove and unique feature wallpaper covered in faces as they make their way through the market.
To bring the vision to life, artists added dynamic layers to unique pockets
of this lively, inner-city market.
